- The primary benefit on this day was that the 150-600mm lens afforded me the ability to stand on the shore and not get wet. I was able to shoot through the constantly changing early morning light and it allowed me the ability overcome the limitation of a fixed focal length lens as it gave me the important availability of framing images exactly as desired.

- I love those early morning silhouettes. Want to be successful in photography…shoot early…take a long nap… and then shoot again through the sunset hour. Look for shadows and side-lighting and look for the possibility of silhouettes. Meter and close the lens down about three f-stops. Avoid flat lighting. In this shot, an early morning trip to Venice Beach provided many opportunities to shoot both with the rising sun and against it.

- Photography is in the details. Shooting in minimal and overcast early morning light, this image was made possible utilizing the widest aperture possible on the 70-200mm f/2.8. Never overlook shooting closeups of sports equipment and hands and feet in action. The image was helped along by using the shallow 2.8 setting to blur out the details in the background.

- It’s the old ‘Hail Mary’ shot with a Canon camera and the Tamron 15-30mm mounted on the end of a monopod and hung out over the top of a wall during a Tough Mudder competition. I blindly shot a dozen or so pictures while trying to frame the image…and not fall off the top of the wall, produced one decent frame.

- One of the key benefits of long focal length lenses at wide open apertures is to blur out bad backgrounds. In this case, a 600mm waist up view of a softball pitcher, combined with a narrow depth of field worked well in getting the viewer’s eye to gravitate to the pitcher.

- Focal length : 200mm Exposure : F/3.2 1/1300 sec ISO 3200
- One of the primary lenses of choice for sports photographers is the 70-200mm f/2.8 and the simple fact is that all photographers should have one. The wide aperture will allow you the ability to shoot under limited lighting situations such as at indoor sporting events. In this case, the figure skater went through a series of moves that I shot at twelve frames per second in an attempt to capture her maximum height. The shallow depth of field of f/3.2 left me a little margin for a focus shift but it was still wide enough to fuzz out the distracting backgrounds.

- A photographic advantage of super long lenses like the 150-600mm G2 is the ability of the lens to compress depth. In this image, it looks like these three players are very close together, but in reality, the goalie and his defenseman are actually about 60 feet away from each other. This compression can lead to an interesting composition.

- The dog park is a great place to try out new equipment. It’s especially great for testing the tracking ability of your cameras and lenses on fast moving erratic targets. In this case not the hard action images, but rather a basic dog portrait shot. Action of course is great in sports photography, but it is always about the eyes. Tack sharp exactly where it needs to be.
