Capturing the Magic of May Flowers

Tips & Images © Felicia Fullwood

Join Felicia Fullwood as she travels across the US by van on a photo-centric road trip! She was able to capture amazing images of desert poppies in Arizona to the incredible California Superbloom. Find out how Felicia was able to get the most out of her Tamron lenses to capture these stunning scenes.

Tip #1) Experiment with your aperture and depth of field. With a variable aperture of f/2.8, both the @TamronAmericas 24-70 G2 and the 70-200 G2 are perfect for getting that shallow depth of field and beautiful background blur, also known as bokeh. Use a wide aperture of f/2.8 to separate the flower from the background and really emphasize it. On the other hand, you can use a higher aperture like f/9 or f11 to get the entire scene in focus.

Tip #2) Try Different Focal Lengths. Using either the @TamronAmericas 24-70mm f/2.8 G2 or the 70-200 f/2.8 G2 lenses, you can choose from a wide variety of focal lengths allowing you to experiment with different perspectives. Zoom in to 100 or 200mm for close-ups that emphasize the details of individual flowers or zoom out to 24mm for wider shots that show off the entire landscape.

Tip #3) Use a fast shutter speed and low ISO. If it’s windy out and the flowers are moving at all it’s important to keep your shutter speed high to make sure you capture the movement and avoid blurry images. You also want to aim to keep your ISO at 100, or as low as you can while utilizing natural light to reduce noise and get the sharpest images possible.

Tip #4) Capture Unique Perspectives. Don't be afraid to get creative with your compositions. Experiment with different angles and perspectives to add visual interest to your flower photos. Try shooting from low angles to capture flowers against the sky or get closer to the ground for unique and captivating shots.

Tip #5) Showcase the Flower's Environment. Experiment with capturing the flower's environment and showcasing its surroundings as part of a larger scene. Capture the flower in its natural form such as blooming in a valley, in the mountains, interacting with other plants, or just contrasting against a unique background. This helps bring the image to life and adds more context.
