How to: Clean a Lens

Tip #1) Taking Care of your Lens
Cleaning and maintaining your lens isn’t too hard. You will just need to be a bit careful when doing it yourself as to not cause any damage. Other maintenance or performance issues like optical adjustments or updates can be performed by Tamron Americas and are generally covered under the 6-year warranty.

There are four things you will clean off your lens quite regularly. Dust, dirt and oil smudges from fingerprints, or evaporated water will appear on the lens especially with a lot of use. It should only take a few minutes to clean your lens and to do so, you will just need a few simple cleaning tools.

You should never attempt to open your lens and clean it yourself. You will void any warranty, and you may not be able to reassemble the lens properly. If you should ever need to have you lens cleaned internally, please allow the Tamron Repair Department to handle the more extensive cleaning.

Tip #2) Cleaning Tools
There are a few useful tools or devices to use to clean your lens. If you want to routinely clean your lens, then it’s probably best to have a lens cleaning kit. These kits are usually inexpensive and come with an assortment of tools which normally include a microfiber cloth, soft brush, air blowers and lens cleaning solution or spray. Another popular tool is a lens pen which has a brush on one end and a non-liquid cleaning agent on the other. All mentioned will come in handy when you need a quick cleaning.

A microfiber lens cloth comes in handy to give your lens a quick polish when you’re taking your photos. When using a lens cloth start on the outer edges and gently circle towards the center, rubbing away dirt or smudges. Then repeat in the reverse, by starting in the center towards the edge to polish the element.

Lens brushes have soft bristles designed not to damage your lens. They’re pretty simple to use, just gently brush the surface of the lens until you’ve removed any dust or dirt particles.

Another popular and useful tool for cleaning your lens is an air blower. Air blowers are a better option for larger dust particles. Point the nozzle toward the element and squeeze hard. The forced air will blow away any particles of dust

Tip #3) Storage & Maintenance
You can reduce the amount of dust that gets into your lens by just cleaning it properly every now and then. Storing your lens capped and in dry conditions when not in use is often also overlooked. This simple step can help in maintaining your lens. Dust on the inside of the lens is normal, and it will not affect your image quality unless it becomes extreme.

If you would like a more extensive cleaning or have a repair issue, you can always contact Tamron Customer Service for assistance and get information on how to send your lens in. The repair depart will perform a clean and check. If you’re in need of service, please contact us for more details.
