    Making a V-Card

Hello everyone, DIY photography is at it again. This month we’ll be doing some more light modification by building a V-Card. It is essential to be in full control of the light when photographing people. To be able to be as versatile as possible is crucial especially when we’re on a budget. Luckily with this cheap and easy to do V-Card, I’m able to enhance my light and make my images come to life.

Before we get into the build, let’s talk about what a V-Card is. Basically, it acts as a reflector, but being that the source is white, it gives off a much subtler look and softens the light beautifully. The v-card that I will be building is 4x8 feet, but you can make these any size you want. Just remember the bigger the source, the softer the light will be.

Okay now that we got that out of the way, here is what we’ll need to get this build off the ground.

    • Insulation panels (1)
    • Duct Tape
    • Saw/utility knife

Yup, you read that right, just two things we will need to get this together. So easy, so cheap, and only takes minutes to put together. The panel that I bought was from the hardware store. It was 4x8 feet and cost about $15. You can certainly do this with foam core as well, I just figured that the insulation panel would be more sturdy and last longer.

Now that we have the materials, it’s time to make our cut. I measured right in the middle at the 2-foot mark and drew a straight line from end to end. Then make the cut with a utility knife or whatever saw you have. A circular saw would be perfect for something like this, just make sure your cut is nice and straight. Now we have two 2x8 pieces. This now allows us to tape it together and have it stand on its own. So now take the two pieces and tape them together on the reflective side allowing you to close the white sides together.

And there you have it! There is now a nice large and easy to use reflective surface for you to use for portraits, group shots, or even the occasional selfie. I hope you enjoyed this month’s build and shoot..until next time. Happy shooting everyone!
