Product Overview

Expand your options with high-power zooming from 16mm wide-angle.
Spanning an ultra-wide spectrum of focal lengths, the all-in-one zoom lens is a supremely versatile photographic tool. Now, Tamron sets a new standard with a revolutionary new 18.8X zoom lens for APS-C sized digital SLR cameras. This single lens covers 16mm to 300mm and provides macro focusing. It combines our latest advances in optical design - including the deployment of aspherical elements and newly developed glass - with multiple layers of coating to produce clear, sharp images while maintaining compact dimensions. Imagine the creative possibilities embodied in this latest breakthrough from the pioneer in high-power zooms!

The world's first 18.8X zoom, plus 1:2.9 macro reproduction.
Zooming from 16mm (35mm equivalent:24.8mm) to 300mm (35mm equivalent: 465mm), at its widest-angle setting this lens can shoot sweeping panoramic landscapes and intimate interiors, and as a telephoto it can capture powerful close-ups of distant subjects. Macro focusing down to 1:2.9 is also provided.

VC (Vibration Compensation).
VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. It employs three driving coils that electromagnetically activate a shake-compensating VC lens group. Since the VC lens elements are held in place only by three ceramic ball bearings, there is smooth movement with little friction. Even when shooting long-range or under low light, the viewfinder image remains stable and the tracking response is excellent.

PZD (Piezo Drive) for faster, quieter autofocusing.
With Tamron's PZD (Piezo Drive), autofocusing is noticeably faster and quieter. You can capture crisp images spontaneously, even in noise-sensitive situations. There is enhanced support for contrast-detection AF capabilities, and focusing when in live-view mode is smoother. Full-time manual override lets you make fine focus adjustments at any time without having to switch out of autofocus mode.

Advanced optical and mechanical design technology achieve high image quality in a compact, lightweight zoom.
The cutting-edge lens design consists of 16 elements in 12 groups and includes three Molded-Glass Aspherical elements, two LD (Low Dispersion) elements and UXR (Ultra-Extra Refractive Index) glass. Together, they correct optical aberrations, while state-of-the-art multi-layer coating significantly minimizes ghosting and flare to deliver images of exceptional clarity. The entire package is kept incredibly compact through the use of advanced mechanical design engineering.

Elegant new style.
The rubber grips on the zoom and focus rings have a rectilinear grid pattern that adds sophistication to the design, while the signature Tamron brand ring in tungsten silver enhances its luxurious finish.

Moisture-resistant construction.
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent moisture from penetrating the lens.

Technology

Di II Tamron Di-II lenses are engineered expressly for digital SLR cameras* with image sensors commonly referred to as APS-C, measuring approximately 24mm x 16mm. Rendering an ideal image circle for APS-C sensors, Di-II lenses are also include properties to optimize digital imaging performance.
Vibration Compensation

Tamron’s Unique State-of-the-Art In-Lens Image Stabilization System
Handheld camera shake is the leading cause of blurry and unsharp pictures. Several leading companies now make lenses with built-in optical image-stabilization systems that sense the amplitude and direction of the shake and compensate by moving optical groups within the lens. Tamron’s exclusive new Vibration Compensation (VC) system that’s built into the Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro and the Tamron AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di-II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lenses performs a similar function, but it executes it much more effectively due to its innovative breakthrough design.

AD

PZD (Piezo Drive) piezoelectric AF motor
Piezoelectric drive replaces traveling wave energy with more efficient standing wave energy for higher AF performance with less weight and bulk. A vital contributor to compactness, PZD focuses quickly and precisely, assuring sharper results in demanding conditions with speed that captures spontaneous moments crisply—moments that might otherwise be lost to image softness. PZD is exceptionally quiet, making it ideal for nature, live performance shooting, golf and other conditions that demand quiet operation.

PZD Diagram

Low Dispersion

Low Dispersion (LD) Glass for Greater Lens Sharpness
Low dispersion (LD) glass elements in a lens help reduce chromatic aberration; the tendency of light of different colors to come to different points of focus at the image plane. Chromatic aberration reduces the sharpness of an image, but glass with an extremely lowdispersion index, has less of a tendency to separate (defract) a ray of light into a rainbow of colors. This characteristic allows the lens designer to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration at the center of the field (on axis), a particular problem at long focal lengths (the telephoto end of the zoom range), and for lateral chromatic aberration (towards the edges of the field) that often occurs at short focal lengths (the wide-angle end of the zoom range.)

Aspherical

Hybrid Aspherical Elements Provide the Ultimate in Image Quality and Compactness
Tamron uses several hybrid aspherical lens elements in many lenses bearing the Aspherical designation. These innovative optics allow us to achieve the ultimate in image quality, and at the same time produce lenses that offer remarkable zoom ranges in extraordinarily compact packages. By perfecting theses cutting-edge advances for series production, Tamron has advanced the state of optical design, and virtually eliminated spherical aberration and image distortion from the high-power-zoom series.Through the effective application of Hybrid Aspherical Technology, one lens elemen tcan take the place of multiple elements without compromising performance. This is what allows us to produce remarkably compact long-range lenses that deliver a uniformly high level of image quality at all focal lengths and apertures.

Internal Focusing

Internal Focusing (IF) System
Internal focusing (IF) provides numerous practical benefits to photographers including a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarizing and graduated filters, and more predictable handling because the lens length does not change during focusing. Even more important, Tamron’s Internal Focusing (IF) system provides a much closer minimum focusing distance (MFD) throughout its entire focusing range. In addition, IF improves optical performance by minimizing illumination loss at the corners of the image field, and helps to suppress other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions.

Moisture Resistant Moisture Resistant
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent moisture from penetrating the lens.
Zoom Lock

Zoom Lock (ZL) Feature
Another original Tamron mechanical engineering concept is the Zoom Lock (ZL), a simple convenience feature that prevents undesired extension of the lens barrel when carrying the camera/lens unit on a neck strap.

The Risk of Purchasing Gray Market Products:
In looking for our products, you may find that products not supplied through our regular channel are sold in your market. Such products are generally called "gray-market products" and may involve quality problems.

Interchangeable lenses are precision optical and mechanical products. Therefore, if handling during transportation or storage is not adequate, defects or malfunctions may occur. As for our products supplied through our regular distribution channel, meticulous care is taken in transportation and storage in order to ensure quality protection. However, in the case of gray-market products, it is more likely that they are handled inadequately during transportation or storage; are exposed to undesirable conditions such as high temperatures, vibration, shock, high humidity, dust, dirt and so on; or that they have been mixed up with used products since they are not under our strict control. Therefore, we are unable to warrant the quality of gray-market products.

Always look for Tamron products that are supplied through our authorized distribution channel. By purchasing Tamron products from an authorized dealer, you can ensure the quality of the product, which will be also covered by Tamron USA's Six-Year Limited Warranty, the only warranty accepted by Tamron USA, Inc. in the USA as of October 1, 2007. To find an authorized Tamron dealer near you, please click here.

If you have any question as to the authenticity of a dealer or product, please do not hesitate to contact our Service Department at 1-800-827-8880, Option 1, to discuss your impending purchase.
