TIPS FOR TAKING SUNRISE,SUNSET OR NIGHTTIME IMAGES
© Ken Hubbard

There is almost always enough light to take a picture. This image was taken at night illuminated by a full moon. It was taken with the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 for 10 seconds ISO 800. When doing night shots, here are a few tips to remember.

  1. Use a tripod, place your camera on a solid surface.
  2. Use a cable release or you can use the camera in self timer mode to avoid any accidental camera shake.
  3. For long exposures, very common in night photography, make sure that you turn OFF any camera or lens stabilizers. With long exposure photography, the stabilizer can actually cause shake.

  1. When shooting sunrises/sunsets use the nice warm light and long shadows to create dramatic images
  2. Try to find elements that will work with the dramatic light, like the PUBLIC MARKET neon lights, which match nicely to the colors in the sky.
  3. Silhouettes of your main subjects can help make your images more dramatic
  4. Use Neutral Graduated Density Filters to help control the Contrast between Hi-lights and Shadows
