Tamron’s recent announcement of a new state-of-the-art Mini-Dome camera with built-in 12X wide-angle-to-telephoto Tamron lens puts the company in the forefront of a rapidly expanding, highly diversified dome camera market. Drawing on its deep knowledge base in developing high-resolution, high performance lenses for such demanding applications as professional digital SLR photography and mega-pixel CCTV security systems, the new Tamron Mini-Dome camera, available in NTSC (Model DCV12) and PAL (DCV12PR4) versions, features a superb Tamron 3.8-45.6mm lens boasting the best zoom ratio in its class. It also provides a host of ingenious new features that enhance its performance, convenience, and flexibility. To give you a better idea of what the new Tamron Mini-Dome camera can do, where it fits into the security/surveillance market, and what makes it so special, we interviewed Steve Beaulieu, National Sales Manager of the Industrial Optics Division of Tamron USA. |

“The primary advantage of any dome camera is that it integrates the camera and lens into a single unit,” explains Beaulieu, “and that means that the camera takes up less space and is more convenient to install. However, with previous dome cameras you often had to give up something to get these advantages, usually optical range, mounting flexibility, ease of focus adjustment, etc. Basically Tamron’s new Mini-Dome camera delivers the upsides with none of the downsides. It’s a very neat little dome package that’s aesthetically pleasing, optically outstanding, and moderately priced. It provides a 12X zoom range that’s tops in its class, includes the all-important wide-angle settings for optimum coverage in large or small spaces, delivers high resolution, 540-line performance with excellent detail in day or night applications, and it’s UL listed, operating on 12 volts DC or 24 volts AC. Installers and end-users will appreciate that it features manual triple-axis adjustment (pan/tilt/rotation), so you can, for example, mount the Mini-Dome against a wall and have it look to the side. Finally, and this is crucial in airports, schools, prisons and other critical applications, it’s built to IP66 standards, which means it’s weather-, water-, and vandal-resistant.” |

“Having a Tamron Mini-Dome camera with a 3.8 wide to 45.6mm telephoto lens (5-60mm when converted for use with a 1/3-inch camera) really transforms this into a broad-spectrum product and we expect to see it used in a wider variety of indoor and outdoor applications, and placed in many new kinds of locations,” observes Beaulieu. “Whenever I’ve demonstrated this camera, I’ve gotten some standard reactions from potential purchasers. Everybody says it looks gorgeous and they’re clearly impressed with the zoom range and other specs, but what really turns them on is the push-button controls for focus and field-of-view adjustments. On a typical dome camera you’ve got to physically turn the lens to adjust it, and then when you replace the cover, the settings can change, especially the focus. So you go back and forth, which can be very frustrating. With the Tamron Mini-Dome camera you set the focus and field of view more easily to begin with and before you replace the cover, you push the menu button, which starts a 30-sec countdown, giving you time to replace the cover. The field of view you’ve set does not change, but if the camera has gone out of focus at any time, it will automatically refocus itself! When I show this camera to installers and system integrators, they say ‘this feature can save me time and money’ so I know we’ve got a winner here.” “Clearly the single most important feature of this camera is the 12X Tamron lens, an advanced high resolution design using aspherical elements to provide excellent image quality from the center to the corners of the image field,” says Beaulieu. But there are a lot of thoughtful little details that show the care and attention that have been lavished on this landmark design. There’s a terminal output near the operating button so the camera can easily be connected to a monitor via the conversion cable, simplifying confirmation of the proper angle of view at the installation site. Screw holes are provided on the optional wall-mount for gang-box installation. The dome cover mounts quickly by means of three screw holes and there’s a rubber strap to prevent it from falling. The unit features a privacy masking function and supports an RS485 communications system for remote control. “To state it in terms of the big picture, what the new Tamron Mini-Dome camera really does is to bring the superior technology from our acclaimed photo division into the CCTV arena,” concludes Steve Beaulieu. “In other words, it embodies the traditional Tamron virtues of innovative design, reliability, high quality, and high value. For system integrators and installers, the equation is simple—it delivers outstanding performance while lowering the cost of labor, and that saves money on the whole installation while minimizing maintenance costs for the end-user. That’s a pretty good definition of a win-win.” |

Speedy Installation The numerous design features that make installation a snap truly make this high res and optically powerful mini-dome camera stand out from the crowd. Tamron engineers paid particular attention to details both big and small that would make the term “speedy installation” synonymous with the Tamron DCV12 mini-dome camera. Setting the angle of view is quick and user-friendly. A manual triple-axis adjustment (or right to left), tilting (+/- 80° up or down/+/- 70° when set at wideangle) and rotation (+/- 360°) to ensure your ability to set the optimum angle of view. Tamron’s AF Install Mode is designed to perform continuous auto-focusing for 30-seconds after dome cover installation so that defocusing after installation can be prevented. Installation is completed in just three easy steps: |

Attention to Detail Several other design features on the new Tamron mini-dome camera offer ultimate installation ease. These include a rotation mechanism which has a grip for ease-of-use and smooth operation. Markings on the rotating portion of the grip indicate the correct screen position, allowing you to precisely set horizontal alignment on the monitor. A monitor output terminal is provided near the operating button so the camera can be connected to a monitor via the conversion cable supplied as a standard accessory. This simplifies confirming a desired angle of view at the installation site. Compared to other makes, the Tamron DCV12 provides quicker mounting of the dome cover since it features just three screw holes instead of four. A handy rubber strap is attached between the dome and the dome cover to prevent the cover from falling during installation. The Tamron mini-dome is ideal for outdoor installation. Its vandal-resistant design and IP66 watertight/dustproof design protects the camera. Around-the-clock surveillance is ensured as the camera and lens both support day/night functions. |
